A quick run-down of the job

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Engineer who will lead the design, development, and maintenance of our scalable and secure backend infrastructure. In this role, you are expected to split your work between frontend and backend. In order to move quickly, the emphasis initially will likely be on frontend work during the first few months, with a gradual shift towards backend responsibility over the near-term.

We are a small team, and every one of our engineers is expected to strongly contribute to Jumper’s success by coming up with independent ideas and solutions to complex challenges. The current team includes: a Senior Full-Stack, a Junior Frontend Engineer, a Product Designer, a Technical Product Manager and a Business Lead. In addition, one more Full-Stack Engineer will be added to the team soon. In the near future, we would also love to see one of the Sr. Engineers to evolve into an engineering lead position for our small team.

Please note: You must be located in the EMEA region. Your application will not be considered if you're outside EMEA.

What you’ll do

  • Architecting and implementing scalable and robust infrastructure solutions that can handle growing user loads and evolving business needs (we are already used by over 100k monthly active users).
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive test suites, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests, to ensure the reliability of backend systems.
  • Design and develop high quality frontend applications that are testable and maintainable.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science is a plus.
  • Previous working experience in the blockchain space or related technical understanding is a plus (especially with Wagmi).

We encourage you to apply if you feel your experience and skills equip you for this job but are not listed here!

We bring together entrepreneurs, industry experts, and investors to launch companies that transform the healthcare system and empower people to live their healthiest lives. Our companies include Calibrate, Lively, Vault Health and Jasper. We’re capitalized with permanent capital from world-class institutional investors and entrepreneurs.

At Redesign Health, we’ve unlocked healthcare innovation at scale, and a key aspect of progress toward our mission of redesigning health for everyone is understanding the impact the companies we create have on the healthcare industry and the people who use it.

That means that as an organization we’re focused on specific areas of impact within healthcare. Those are: increasing access to care, increasing the quality of care provided, removing cost from the healthcare system and improving healthcare equity.

These four pillars shape everything we do, and every company idea that receives funding at Redesign Health must demonstrate that it has the potential to improve one or more of the above criteria without negatively impacting any of the others.

Sounder Benefits was created with the aim to remove cost from the healthcare system. SMBs and employees are facing a fully-insured health insurance crisis. In response to rising healthcare costs, SMBs are participating in more cost-sharing with employees increasing their cost and impacting access to care. Sounder Benefits is an innovative data-driven solution for SMBs to move to self-funded options and realize significant savings.  We very much believe this commitment to improving cost of healthcare is critical to the long-term success of the company.

In response to rising healthcare costs, SMBs are participating in more cost-sharing with employees increasing their cost and impacting access to care. About The Opportunity

As Venture Chair of Sounder Benefits, you will support the CEO and Redesign on the mission to launch a new business focused on building an innovative tech and services platform that is deliberately designed to help small and medium sized businesses easily transition to self-funding, driving cost savings and more tailored employee benefits.

Small to medium size businesses (SMBs) are facing a rising healthcare cost crisis driven by a system of carriers and brokers that is incentivized to keep SMBs in expensive and generic fully-insured (FI) plan options (increasing 10%+ YoY). Where Fortune 500 companies have access to negotiating power, emerging technology, and high-quality / expensive benefits consultants, SMBs are ill-equipped to fight-back today. This is causing SMBs, now more than ever, to explore alternative benefits options to FI, evidenced in part by the massive spike in level-funded plan adoption over the last 12-24 months.

Sounder Benefits plans to upend this cycle and give power back to SMBs by placing them on a path to self-funding. Our differentiated tech and services platform provides purpose built services to our SMB clients: (i) benefits consulting, (ii) data and analytics / AI capabilities, and (iii) additional benefits products (e.g., launching a group captive that helps SMBs pool risk and negotiate better contracts under our tech and services platform).

Our offering is significantly differentiated from traditional brokers with better incentives, more innovative tech, and new product offerings overtime, ultimately driving more savings for SMBs (potentially as much as 20%+ YoY).

What you’ll do:

  • Mentor and coach the CEO with a focus on commercialization and product strategy, fundraising preparation and execution, and / or operational design and execution.
  • Introduce CEOs to prospective partners, investors, customers, vendors etc. by leveraging their own professional networks.
  • If company is pre-CEO: Actively participate in all aspects of CEO hiring; including advising on target profiles, providing referrals, and serving as an interview panelist in close partnership with Redesign Health’s CEO Talent team.
  • Provide talent referrals and participate in interviewing prospective founding team candidates.
  • Vote on material business decisions reserved for the Board (e.g., stock option grants, debt incurrence, equity financing, M&A).
  • Collaborate with other board members and the CEO during Board meetings to discuss key strategic decisions (e.g., M&A, strategic pivots, GTM approach, pricing design).
  • Participate in KPI reviews to ensure the company is on track to achieving milestones.
  • Review business development activities and sales pipeline/pitches. While also providing oversight and tactical insights throughout the sales journey and process.
  • Partner with Redesign Health to ensure alignment with strategy and direction of the company.
  • Act as a steward of the Redesign Health business model with a clear understanding of the value proposition.
  • Complete all required Redesign Health disclosure documents and training for OpCo Directors.
  • Collaborate with RH Director and RH's CEO Talent Team to provide relevant input on CEO performance, ensuring effective leadership alignment and company growth objectives.
  • Represent the OpCo in relevant industry events and forums, enhancing visibility and reputation in the healthcare community.
  • Time commitment: The dedicated time commitment will vary weekly depending on the stage of the company’s lifecycle. The average hourly expectation is two hours per week. In addition, the Venture Chair will be expected to attend quarterly official Board meetings in additional regular monthly Board check-ins.

What you’ll need:

  • Significant experience holding executive leadership positions (e.g. CEO, President, Chief Commercial Officer, General Manager) at an organization relevant to the Operating Company.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the OpCo’s target market and customers.
  • Demonstrated success with go-to-market / commercialization, fundraising, and driving businesses to successful exits.
  • A track record of advising for and / or investing in successful early-stage healthcare organizations. Prior Board experience is strongly preferred.
  • A robust BD network that is relevant to the OpCo, with an ability to unlock market and / or partnership opportunities.
  • Strong relationships with investors and the ability to help with external fundraising efforts.
  • Clear, direct and effective communication style with prior experience coaching and mentoring executives.
  • Highly reliable and accountable, with the ability to participate in regular Board meetings and be available on an ad-hoc basis as necessary (in accordance with appropriate time commitment expectations).

In addition to doing customer delivery work, you will be helping us co-design our Design Suite, as well as a workflow management tool called Orchestra. We have open sourced Orchestra, and are building it to empower creative and analytical experts in their work.

  • You are happy to work on a customer deliverable for a few hours at a time, and then move on to a different customer's deliverable.
  • You are excited to learn our Design Suite.
  • You care about and want to contribute to our mission of helping people do meaningful work.

Don't fear:

  • We're flexible on the number of years of previous experience for this role. We highly favor talent and interest.

      Backend Software Engineer

      Enveritas • 1 week ago

Do you want to work for a mission-driven non-profit, writing software that will contribute to helping the livelihoods of millions of coffee farmers around the world? Enveritas is a 501(c)3 non-profit and Y Combinator-backed startup looking to hire for our Engineering & Data Group. You can learn more about this job and about our Backend and Data Engineering Team at https://www.enveritas.org/jobs/backend-software-eng/

We are looking for two backend software engineers with a focus on python and PostgreSQL to join us on a remote/global, full-time basis. Our Backend and Data Engineering Team is a four-person team (soon to be six!) and is part of our Engineering & Data Group — a quirky, talented, and humble group of about twenty with diverse backgrounds ranging from journalism to academia to international industry.

About Our Backend & Data Engineering Team

The Backend & Data Engineering Team builds software to collect, analyze, and report data about coffee farmers’ conditions and practices. This large-scale data-collection effort requires many moving parts to work together, and we use technology to support that effort at every step of the process — from identifying coffee farms in satellite imagery, to coordinating survey edits across country teams, to detecting data anomalies in real-time that can be investigated while teams are still in the field. A core part of our work is in data aggregation and report generation, with insights ultimately being shared with roasters and other stakeholders on how to assist in improving the social, economic, and environmental conditions of smallholder farmers.

While our tooling varies across internal products, our backend services primarily use a Python/PostgreSQL stack running on Linux to run our GraphQL APIs. We use git and Github for maintaining our code, CircleCI for CI/CD, and AWS for hosting our services and static resources, with containerization where appropriate for development and deployment. We've begun working with Terraform.

      What You’ll Be Doing

You will contribute to major feature planning and development, both independently and in collaboration with your teammates.

      • Implement new features on our core platforms, Jebena and Sini. You’ll participate in long-term planning and product roadmaps, collaborate with product managers on writing specs for the team to implement, and develop features from specs. You should be comfortable collaborating with non-Engineering teams to understand their feature needs. A lion’s share of your time will be spent working with Python and PostgreSQL to add features to our internal platforms.
      • Maintenance and enhancements of existing code. You’ll work with other engineers to triage and resolve incoming issues (we use Sentry). Our team also reserves Fridays for bug-fixing, resolving technical debt, and discovering/relieving pain-points for our users.

      Qualifications

Read this first: research shows that people of different backgrounds read job postings differently. If you don’t think you meet all of the qualifications but do think you’d be a great match for us, please consider applying and sharing more in your cover letter. We’d love to talk with you to see what skills you can bring to our team. This said, we are most likely to be interested in your candidacy if you can demonstrate the majority of the qualifications listed below:

      • A degree in computer science, or equivalent training in the principles of software engineering.
      • Strong grasp of design patterns for building software that is well-encapsulated, performant, and elegant.

      • Extensive experience with Python and PostgreSQL, and creating well-designed data models.
      • Background developing applications that provide HTTP-based APIs.
      • Familiarity with docker containers, AWS services (EC2, RDS, CloudFront), and CI/CD setups.
      • Excellent communication and analytical skills.

      Who You Are

Our team is fully distributed, so you should be comfortable with remote work. This role is a full-time individual contributor role. While you can be located anywhere that our EOR (Deel) supports, our core hours are 10am to 2pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, with team members choosing either an early start or later stop as suits them.

You should be inspired by our mission to improve the lives of smallholder coffee farmers, and have an interest in sustainability. You should have a deep empathy for users of our tools and understand the importance of supporting the work of other teams. Because operational and business needs can be ambiguous and change on a short time-scale, you should have a love for environments with uncertainty, and enjoy not only solving problems, but discovering and demystifying them.

      Senior Editor Local Reporting Network

      ProPublica • 1 week ago

ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network is helping local and regional news organizations produce the kind of accountability reporting that is so vital to our democracy. We recently announced our 50 State Initiative, in which we committed to partnering with local news organizations in all 50 states over the next five years. We are hiring a senior editor to oversee five projects each year. The selected editor will guide and edit the work of our local reporting partners and will collaborate with editors in partners’ newsrooms to envision multipart projects. As with all our work at ProPublica, the job is ultimately to create compelling investigations that spur change.

The collaborative projects with our Local Reporting Network partners have garnered the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, the George Polk Award, the Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting, National Magazine Awards, and top prizes from organizations such as Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Online News Association, the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Association of Health Care Journalists.

      What you would be doing:

      • Editing five reporters pursuing yearlong projects, each at a different newsroom.
      • Working in collaboration with partner newsrooms to execute stories that can take a variety of forms, from newspaper-style takeouts to magazine, audio and video pieces.
      • Coordinating with a team at ProPublica that includes research, data, news applications, engagement, audience development and design to elevate your projects.
      • Coaching journalists who range in experience from veteran investigative reporters who have tackled big subjects to newer journalists working on their first large-scale investigations.

We’re looking for someone who has:

      • At least five years’ experience managing or leading complex investigations as a reporter or editor.
      • Experience reporting or editing collaborative projects with communication and diplomacy skills that center building consensus and meeting different needs of different audiences.
      • Experience with juggling multiple projects and many responsibilities at once. Strong organizational skills are a must.
      • Ability to meet deadlines and handle pressure while remaining calm.
      • The editing range to handle and think creatively about different types of investigative storytelling, including rolling investigations, traditional investigative projects, narratives and multimedia formats.
      • The bedside manner to help reporters land what is often the most challenging work of their career.
      • Interest in and experience teaching reporters about fact checking, organization, interviewing and other journalism skills.

This job is full time and includes benefits. (Read more about ProPublica’s benefits.) ProPublica is based in New York City, but remote applicants anywhere in the U.S. are welcome. For those who prefer working in person, we have offices in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $195,000.

This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.

      What you should send us:

      • The most important part of your application is your past work. Send us links to your best stuff. Let us know how your editing shaped and improved the stories. Tell us about any challenges you faced in the reporting or editing of the story/project, how you overcame them and what you learned from the experience. Editing is about far more than moving around words. Show us how you think and interact with reporting and reporters.
      • Working with local reporters — and doing so in partnership — is a unique experience. In a paragraph or two, please share your thoughts about the skills and experience you bring that would make you a good editor for the LRN.
      • Your resume.

We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them and will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site, through at least May 15.

Questions? Send an email to talent@propublica.org.

Reporting to a Senior Manager, Software Engineering, the Manager, Software Engineering will work with members of your teams to support and develop their skills and career, as we work together to empower small businesses. • Be committed to the success of your people. You will help them set goals, have regular 1-on-1s, and provide constructive feedback and coaching to ensure your team's success. You’ll work to understand employees’ career direction and work to empower their journey by acting as a mentor and coach.
      • Develop a world-class team alongside a world-class growth organization. You’ll participate in recruiting events and the hiring process while also working to level up your internal team while implementing new processes, all to develop a world-class Frontend Foundations team.

      • To be a leader and mentor. You’ll bring your shared experience into conversations to influence and provide constructive feedback to direct reports throughout the journey to ensure goals are being met and exceeded
